The High Court Division of the Supreme Court has disposed of 62,637 long-pending cases in just 12 working days, marking a major step toward reducing the country’s judicial backlog and ensuring faster access to justice.
Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal said the initiative to expedite the disposal of old cases would help end the prolonged wait of litigants and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.
Under the direction of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, the High Court Division undertook a special initiative to prioritise long-pending cases and accelerate their disposal.
“This is undoubtedly a significant and encouraging achievement,” Kazal said, particularly highlighting the disposal of 5,405 old criminal miscellaneous cases in a single day.
He praised the Chief Justice, High Court judges and the Supreme Court administration for taking the initiative, saying further timely and effective measures were expected to reduce the backlog and make justice faster, easier and more accessible.
Kazal also assured that the Attorney General’s Office would continue to cooperate with the judiciary to facilitate the speedy disposal of cases.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said 5,405 old criminal miscellaneous cases were disposed of by 13 criminal motion benches of the High Court Division on August 13 alone.
As a result, 55,730 old criminal miscellaneous cases have been disposed of over the 12 working days. Overall, 62,637 old cases—including criminal miscellaneous and writ cases—have been cleared since the special initiative began.
The initiative was launched on May 7, when judges of the Criminal Motion and Writ Motion Benches were instructed to give priority to long-pending cases and dispose of old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases on designated days each week.
Shafiqul Islam said the initiative to clear old cases would continue.
