The government is building new homes for families affected by recent floods and providing seeds to affected farmers, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said Tuesday.

He said damaged rural infrastructure would be rebuilt under the KABIKHA programme, while the Local Government Engineering Department would take steps to repair damaged roads quickly.

Speaking at a ceremony in Narayanganj’s Bandar, where speedboats were handed over to 12 coastal districts for emergency rescue operations, Dulu said the boats were provided with JICA funding to strengthen the country’s disaster-response capacity.

The double-engine speedboats can operate during sea conditions with a cyclone warning signal No. 4, allowing rescuers to reach remote and disaster-hit areas more quickly.

The minister said another 25 districts would gradually receive rescue boats, while similar equipment would also be provided to haor areas.

He said the government was continuously strengthening rescue capacity to ensure the safe evacuation of people trapped in remote areas during floods, cyclones and tidal surges.
