The Buriganga River came alive on Friday as a traditional boat race was held to mark the 416th anniversary of Dhaka, drawing large crowds to both banks of the river.
Organised by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the event attracted people of all ages, including women, men, children and teenagers, who gathered along the riverbanks, nearby roads and other vantage points to witness the centuries-old tradition.
The enthusiastic turnout reflected the enduring popularity of traditional boat racing among Dhaka residents.
However, many spectators expressed disappointment over shortcomings in the management of the event.
During the race, other boats, steamers and passenger vessels continued to move through the river alongside the competing boats. The lack of effective river traffic control made it difficult for many spectators to follow the competition and identify when the main race was underway.
Despite the organisational shortcomings, the large turnout and spontaneous enthusiasm demonstrated that traditional events such as the Buriganga boat race continue to hold a special place in Dhaka’s cultural life.
Better river traffic management, designated viewing areas and clearer scheduling could make future editions more organised, vibrant and enjoyable for spectators.
