Cox’s Bazar International Airport is expected to be inaugurated in October, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman scheduled to formally open the upgraded facility.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat disclosed the plan on Monday.
“Alongside Biman Bangladesh Airlines, different international airlines will also operate flights from Cox’s Bazar International Airport,” he said.
The minister made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with members of the Aviation and Tourism Journalists’ Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Millat said work to upgrade Cox’s Bazar Airport into an international facility is progressing, while several foreign airlines have already expressed interest in operating flights from the country’s premier tourist destination.
The government has taken initiatives to launch direct international flights from Cox’s Bazar through discussions and coordination with international airlines, he said.
Regarding the Third Terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), the minister said the government is working to make the facility operational in December.
“We are moving forward with the target of making the terminal operational in December. Necessary preparations are underway to this end,” he said.
Millat also said an agreement with the Japanese consortium involved in the Third Terminal project is expected to be signed next month.
Once operational, the Third Terminal will significantly increase HSIA’s passenger-handling capacity and improve service quality, helping provide international-standard facilities at the country’s main aviation gateway, he added.
During the meeting, ATJFB President Tanzim Anwar congratulated Millat on behalf of the organisation on assuming his ministerial responsibilities.
ATJFB General Secretary Baten Biplob and other members of the organisation were also present.
