The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has withdrawn a directive that required all 65,569 government primary schools across Bangladesh to preserve three books, including one written by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and two biographies of his parents, Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
The ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Md Tanvir Mia, confirmed the withdrawal of the order.
The directive, issued on June 3, instructed the Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education to ensure that copies of the three books were preserved in all government primary schools.
The books included “Sobar Age Bangladesh” (Bangladesh First), written by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and two biographies by Mahfuz Ullah: “President Zia: A Political Biography” and “Begum Khaleda Zia: Life and Struggle.”
Following criticism of the directive, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education revoked the order on Monday evening.
