The Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), Indra Mani Pandey, paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shamma Obaed Islam, MP, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (July 7).
During the meeting, the BIMSTEC Secretary General briefed the State Minister on the progress of ongoing initiatives and key developments under the regional grouping. He praised Bangladesh’s leadership and constructive contributions to advancing BIMSTEC’s goals and stressed the importance of stronger regional cooperation to promote shared prosperity, resilience and sustainable development across the Bay of Bengal region.
The State Minister reaffirmed Bangladesh’s continued commitment to the BIMSTEC process and reiterated the government’s determination to further strengthen regional cooperation during its chairmanship of the organisation.
Highlighting the government’s foreign policy priority of putting “Bangladesh First,” she underscored the need to deepen cooperation in key areas, including trade and investment, connectivity, energy, climate change and people-to-people exchanges, to deliver tangible benefits for the region’s people.
She also expressed Bangladesh’s readiness to host various sectoral BIMSTEC meetings at mutually convenient times to ensure the timely implementation of decisions and priorities adopted during its chairmanship.
Both sides exchanged views on possible initiatives that Bangladesh could undertake during its chairmanship to advance the BIMSTEC agenda and achieve the shared vision of building a “Prosperous, Resilient and Open BIMSTEC.”
