State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari on Tuesday told Parliament that the government is working to identify officials who had supported and prolonged the previous “fascist regime” within the administration.
“Different investigative agencies are engaged in identifying those who openly worked in the administration to sustain the former fascist government,” he said during the question-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The session, presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, began at around 3pm.
Responding to a separate question, the state minister said a total of 1,464,350 officials and employees were serving in government jobs across the country as of June 30, 2025, while 521,922 posts remained vacant.
He provided a breakdown of senior-level positions, noting that there are 67 officers against 69 secretary and senior secretary posts, 378 officers against 368 additional secretary posts, 893 officers against 1,116 joint secretary posts, and 2,940 officers against 2,245 deputy secretary posts.
In reply to another query, Abdul Bari said the time required to complete Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) recruitment processes has been gradually reduced in recent years.
He said the final results of the 47th BCS were published within one year and seven months of the recruitment circular, compared to two years, two months and nine days for the 46th BCS, two years, 11 months and 27 days for the 45th, and three years and seven months for the 44th BCS.
The government aims to publish the final results of the 50th BCS within one year of issuing the recruitment circular, he added.
The state minister also said promotions in government service are a continuous process based on merit, performance and eligibility.
According to the latest data, women now account for 29 percent of government officials and employees.
He further said the government is implementing measures to ensure that recruitment, transfers and postings in public administration remain free from political or undue influence, with merit, integrity and competence serving as the primary criteria.
