Nearly 4,000 tonnes of diesel have arrived in Bangladesh from India through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, marking the 72nd consignment under the arrangement.
A total of 4.7 million litres of diesel was transported from Numaligarh Refinery Limited in India’s Assam to the receiving terminal depot in Parbatipur, Dinajpur.
Rabiul Alam, operations manager of the Parbatipur Railhead Oil Depot, confirmed the development on Tuesday.
The latest consignment began flowing through the pipeline at 9am on September 12 and reached the Parbatipur depot by around 8:30pm on September 13.
The imported diesel is distributed almost equally among Bangladesh’s three state-owned oil marketing companies—Padma Oil, Meghna Petroleum and Jamuna Oil.
Under a 15-year agreement signed between Bangladesh and India on April 9, 2018, Bangladesh was to import around 2 million tonnes of diesel from India.
Since the pipeline was inaugurated on March 18, 2023, Bangladesh has imported a total of 330,087 tonnes of diesel from India.
The Bangladesh section of the Friendship Pipeline is 126.57 km long, running through Tetulia, Panchagarh Sadar and Boda in Panchagarh, Nilphamari Sadar and Chirirbandar in Dinajpur before reaching the Parbatipur receiving terminal. The pipeline has been laid about five to eight feet underground.
