Bangladesh is drilling its deepest-ever exploratory gas well at the Titas Gas Field in Brahmanbaria, with authorities expecting the new wells to add at least 45 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas per day to the national grid within six months.
The Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) is drilling three new wells at the field, including Well No. 31 at Nandanpur in Brahmanbaria Sadar, the country’s first deep-gas exploration well.
The well is being drilled to a depth of 5,600 metres, surpassing the previous record of 3,700 metres set in 1969. Drilling began on April 19 and has already reached 4,637 metres.
BGFCL expects to complete drilling of Well No. 31 by the end of 2026 and add at least 15 mmcf of gas per day to the national grid.
The deep well is located in an area believed to contain nearly 2 trillion cubic feet of gas, according to officials involved in the project.
At present, 23 wells at the Titas field produce an average of 331 mmcf of gas per day. Gas is currently extracted from depths of up to 3,700 metres.
Production from existing wells has declined as underground gas reserves and pressure have fallen. Against this backdrop, BGFCL has undertaken a project to drill Wells No. 29, 30 and 31 to boost output.
Drilling of Wells No. 29 and 31 is currently underway, while work on Well No. 30 will begin after the completion of the two ongoing wells.
