German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Rüdiger Lotz paid a courtesy call on Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram at the Speaker’s office on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the Speaker said Bangladesh and Germany have long maintained friendly relations. He noted that the presence of German observers during Bangladesh’s most recent parliamentary election had further strengthened bilateral ties.
He said both countries share a commitment to democratic values and recalled Bangladesh’s long struggle for democracy and independence.
The German ambassador said Bangladesh had moved towards democracy after a prolonged period of authoritarian rule and that the elected government faces several challenges. He pledged Germany’s continued support for strengthening democracy in Bangladesh.
The meeting also discussed forming a Bangladesh-Germany parliamentary committee and expanding parliamentary diplomacy through friendship groups.
The two sides also discussed increasing German investment in Bangladesh, particularly in offshore oil and gas exploration and the establishment of fertiliser plants.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin invited German experts to explore oil and gas resources in Bangladesh’s maritime territory and coastal areas. He said the country’s future economy would depend significantly on energy resources.
Officials from the German Embassy and the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat were present at the meeting.
