A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a two-day remand for two men arrested in connection with the crude bomb explosion at a rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) following its July march in Savar.
Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag passed the order after police sought a seven-day remand.
The remanded suspects are Md. Nurul Islam (52), a former president of the now-banned Chhatra League’s Joymontop union unit in Singair, Manikganj, and a former general secretary of the Jubo League unit, and Md. Sajib (32), identified as a worker of the banned Jubo League. Both lived in Savar’s Anandapur area.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md. Shakhawat Imtiaz of Savar Model Police Station produced the suspects before the court and sought a seven-day remand. Defence lawyers opposed the plea and sought bail, while the prosecution argued in favour of remand. After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand.
The case was filed late Monday by Md. Salamat Ullah, member secretary of the NCP’s Dhaka North district unit, under the Explosives Act against unidentified persons. The two suspects were later arrested by the Dhaka District North Detective Branch (DB) on suspicion of involvement.
According to the case statement, the NCP held a march and rally at Tarapur Eidgah Ground in Savar on Monday night as part of its month-long programme marking the second anniversary of the July movement.
Around 9:30 pm, senior party leaders, including Convener Md. Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, and Chief Organiser for the northern region Sarjis Alam, arrived at the venue.
Shortly before the leaders took the stage, the power supply was cut, plunging the venue into darkness. At about 9:42 pm, while speeches were underway, a crude bomb exploded around 10 to 15 feet in front of the stage.
The blast filled the area with thick white smoke, triggering panic among the crowd. Four people were injured and taken to hospital.
The complaint alleged that the explosion was intended to kill NCP leaders and supporters attending the rally.
Meanwhile, Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parvin has formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Jahangir Alam to investigate the incident. The other members are Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Rakibul Hasan Ishan and Savar Model Police Station Inspector (Intelligence) Nur Mohammad.
