Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected across Bangladesh over the next five days, offering some relief from the heatwave conditions currently affecting parts of the country, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

A mild heatwave sweeping over Dhaka, Faridpur, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna districts may ease soon as rainfall increases across the country.

The weather office, in its five-day forecast issued from 9:00am on Thursday, said light to moderate rain accompanied by temporary gusty winds could occur in many areas, with heavy rain possible at some places.

A new low-pressure system may also form over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, potentially maintaining the rainfall trend over the next several days.

The monsoon axis currently extends from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal through central Bangladesh to Assam. Although the monsoon is relatively less active over the country, it remains moderately active over the North Bay.

During the first 24 hours, rain and thunderstorms are likely in most areas of Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in some areas of Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

On Friday, light to moderate rain may occur at one or two places in all eight divisions. On Saturday, most areas of Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive rain, while other divisions may see scattered showers.

The rainfall trend is expected to continue across the country on Sunday and Monday, with heavy rain possible at some places.

The increased rainfall is likely to bring down daytime temperatures somewhat, providing relief from the prevailing heat.

In the past 24 hours, the country’s highest temperature was recorded at 36.4°C in Jashore, while the highest rainfall was recorded in Rangamati at 65 mm.

In Dhaka, relative humidity stood at 86 per cent at around 6:00am on Thursday, indicating high moisture levels in the air. Rainfall is expected to ease the discomfort caused by the high humidity and heat.
