Water levels in Bangladesh’s major rivers are currently flowing below their danger marks, but levels in the Teesta and several other northern river basins may rise over the next few days due to forecast rainfall, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said Thursday.
In its latest regular bulletin, the centre said moderate to heavy rainfall was likely in the northern and northeastern regions and adjoining upstream areas over the next two days.
As a result, water levels in northern rivers, particularly the Teesta, could rise. The Teesta is expected to continue rising for the next three days, according to the Bangladesh Water Development Board’s FFWC.
Water levels in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma river systems are currently falling and are likely to remain stable over the coming days.
Water levels in the major rivers of the eastern and southeastern regions are also stable, while the Surma-Kushiyara and other rivers are flowing well below their danger marks.
The FFWC said there was currently no major risk of a sudden large-scale flood as most major rivers remained below danger levels.
However, water levels in some low-lying and river-adjacent areas may fluctuate due to local rainfall, particularly in northern and northeastern parts of the country.
The latest assessment was issued Thursday afternoon from the FFWC office at the Bangladesh Water Development Board’s Water Bhaban in Dhaka.
