Bangladesh has sought Bhutan’s cooperation in efforts to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) during a brief meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay in Dhaka on Friday.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan and Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir received Tobgay during his brief stopover at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. They conveyed warm greetings to the Bhutanese prime minister on behalf of Bangladesh’s prime minister.
According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the meeting highlighted the longstanding friendly ties between Bangladesh and Bhutan, recalling Bhutan’s recognition of Bangladesh as the first country after its independence in 1971.
The two sides discussed a range of bilateral issues of mutual interest and stressed the need to further strengthen relations.
Bangladesh also expressed interest in supporting Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City development initiative, particularly by providing Bangladeshi professionals as well as skilled and semi-skilled workers for the project.
The meeting was attended by Bhutan’s ambassador to Bangladesh and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry.
Tobgay stayed for about an hour in the VIP lounge at the airport before departing Dhaka for Germany.
