A life-term prisoner died after falling ill at Kushtia District Jail on Tuesday night, authorities said.
The deceased, Ariful Islam, 27, was the son of Abdul Karim of Rajinathpur village in Khoksa upazila. He had been serving a life sentence in a rape case since 2019.
According to prison officials, Ariful complained of severe chest pain around 8:30pm and soon became critically ill inside the jail.
He was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Resident Medical Officer Dr Iqbal Hasan confirmed that the inmate had died before reaching the hospital.
Jail Superintendent Shariful Alam said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
It will be handed over to the family after the completion of post-mortem examination and necessary legal formalities.
