A Tangail court on Monday sentenced three people to death and four others to life imprisonment for the murder of former Dainya Union Parishad chairman and former vice-president of Tangail Sadar BNP, Rafiqul Islam Faruk.
The court also acquitted one accused in the case.
Judge Md Faisal Al Mamun of the Tangail First Additional District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict on Monday morning. A court inspector confirmed the matter in the afternoon.
The identities of the convicted individuals were not immediately available.
According to the case documents, Faruk lived in a rented house in the Akurtakur area of Tangail town. On December 20, 2013, he went out for his morning walk at around 6:30am.
When he reached the Bottola Bazar area of Akurtakur, a group of assailants shot and hacked him to death. Police later recovered his body from the scene.
The following day, Faruk’s younger brother, Lawlu Mia, filed a murder case with Tangail Sadar Police Station.
After an investigation, then District Detective Branch Inspector and investigating officer Ashok Kumar Singha submitted a charge sheet against eight people on August 13, 2015.
However, the complainant filed a naraji petition challenging the DB charge sheet.
Following a court order, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took over the investigation and submitted another charge sheet against the same eight accused on April 29, 2018. The CID investigation was conducted by Tangail CID Inspector Rafiq Uddin Ahmed.
The trial began at the Tangail First Additional District and Sessions Court after charges were framed against the accused.
The verdict was delivered nearly 13 years after Faruk was killed.
