Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity has urged the government to immediately withdraw its latest decision to raise fuel prices by Tk 20 per litre.
In a statement issued on Monday, the transport passengers’ welfare organisation said the increase came despite a downward trend in global fuel prices, and would further strain people already facing high commodity prices, inflation and job losses linked to the energy crisis.
The organisation said the government has raised fuel prices twice within seven months of taking office, calling the latest increase “anti-people”.
It warned that higher fuel prices would push up transport fares, freight charges, commodity prices and industrial production costs.
The association urged the government to restore the previous fuel prices, saying subsidies in the energy sector could help contain inflation and ease pressure on the public amid the country’s financial difficulties.
