Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to deliver his maiden address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 24, as part of a packed schedule of high-level meetings and diplomatic engagements during his first visit to New York as prime minister.
Before joining the General Debate of the 81st UNGA, Tarique is scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
He will also attend the high-level side event titled “From Commitment to Action: Integrating Midwifery into Primary Health Care to End Preventable Maternal and Newborn Deaths,” where he is scheduled to deliver the opening remarks. The event will focus on strengthening professional midwifery and integrating maternal and newborn care into primary healthcare.
The prime minister is scheduled to address the UNGA at around 5:30pm New York time, although the timing may change depending on the proceedings. He has been allotted 15 minutes for his speech.
Following the address, Tarique will attend a dinner hosted in his honour by Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in New York.
On September 25, he is scheduled to attend a breakfast meeting with Wall Street representatives hosted by JPMorgan at its headquarters in Manhattan. The meeting is expected to focus on Bangladesh’s investment opportunities and economic cooperation.
The prime minister will also meet BNP leaders in the United States before departing New York for Dhaka at 11:00pm New York time on September 25 aboard Emirates flight EK202, via Dubai. He is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on September 27.
This marks Tarique Rahman’s first visit to New York since becoming prime minister on February 17. His UNGA appearance will also be his first address to the world body as head of government.
