Bangladesh and the United States have signed an agreement on strategic civil nuclear cooperation aimed at expanding collaboration in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Prime Minister’s Adviser for Science and Technology Rehan Asad signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Jacob Helberg signed for the United States. The agreement was signed in New York on Friday, according to reports citing Asad and the BNP Media Cell.
The agreement focuses on peaceful nuclear cooperation and recognises the role of nuclear energy in meeting the energy needs of both countries. It also calls for civil nuclear cooperation to follow high standards of nuclear safety, security, safeguards and non-proliferation.
The deal comes as Bangladesh seeks to diversify its long-term energy sources. The country has already built its first nuclear power plant at Rooppur and is exploring broader international cooperation in nuclear science and technology.
According to the BNP Media Cell, the latest agreement continues an initiative on peaceful nuclear cooperation that began in 1981. The claim was also reported by ANI, which said the media cell did not provide further details.
The two countries had earlier signed a broader energy-sector memorandum of understanding in May aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s long-term energy security through diversified energy sources. The latest agreement specifically concerns civil nuclear cooperation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
