Bangladesh Railway will launch a new pair of commuter trains on the Dhaka-Gopalganj-Dhaka route from August 10, responding to a long-standing demand from residents of Gopalganj and adjoining areas.
The new services, Train Nos. 135 and 136, will operate under the name “Abhijatri Commuter”, according to an order issued on July 7 by the Office of the Chief Operating Superintendent of Bangladesh Railway’s Western Zone.
The train will run six days a week, with Saturday designated as its weekly holiday.
Under the schedule, the train will depart Dhaka at 3:30 pm and arrive in Gopalganj at 6:45 pm. After a 30-minute stoppage, the return service will leave Gopalganj at 7:15 pm and reach Dhaka at 10:25 pm.
The commuter train will stop at several stations along the route, including Keraniganj, Srinagar, Mawa, Shibchar, Bhanga Junction, Nagarkanda, Maheshpur and Kashiani Junction, providing improved rail connectivity for passengers travelling between Dhaka and the southwestern region.
The service will operate with an eight-coach rake, offering a total seating capacity of 609 passengers. The train will feature Shovon and Metro-type Shovon Chair classes, with each coach accommodating between 52 and 97 passengers.
Routine maintenance, cleaning and watering of the rake will be carried out at Dhaka to ensure regular and reliable operations. The route covers a distance of 290 kilometres, according to Bangladesh Railway.
Railway officials said the introduction of the Abhijatri Commuter is expected to ease travel for daily commuters, students, government employees and business travellers while improving connectivity between the capital and Gopalganj.
