Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Gabriel Sistiaga recently visited LafargeHolcim Bangladesh’s (LHB) integrated building materials manufacturing facility in Chhatak, Sunamganj, where he toured the company’s production operations and reviewed its sustainability and community development initiatives.
The ambassador was received by LHB Chief Executive Officer Iqbal Chowdhury and members of the company’s leadership team.
During the visit, Sistiaga toured the plant’s production lines and clinker manufacturing operations, gaining an overview of its industrial processes and ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency. He was also briefed on the company’s upcoming strategic projects aimed at supporting Bangladesh’s growing infrastructure and construction needs.
The ambassador commended LHB’s focus on innovation and sustainable industrial practices. He particularly highlighted the role of Geocycle, the company’s waste management arm, in supporting a circular economy through the safe co-processing of waste.
He also expressed interest in LHB’s 17-kilometre cross-border belt conveyor, an engineering link connecting the company’s raw material operations in India with its Chhatak plant in Bangladesh. The conveyor enables the continuous transportation of raw materials while reducing the need for conventional road transportation.
Sistiaga also visited and observed LHB’s community development initiatives in the remote Chhatak region. He commended the company’s corporate social responsibility programmes, including its healthcare clinic, primary school and skills development initiatives for women.
He noted the role of such programmes in supporting local communities and contributing to socio-economic development in the region.
The ambassador expressed his support for LHB’s ongoing and future initiatives in sustainability, environmental management and community development.
“We are deeply honoured to welcome His Excellency Gabriel Sistiaga to our Chhatak facility,” Iqbal Chowdhury, CEO of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, said.
“His appreciation of our sustainable manufacturing practices, circular economy initiatives and community development efforts strengthens our commitment to driving green growth in Bangladesh. We remain dedicated to setting industry benchmarks in innovation, environmental stewardship and social responsibility,” he added.
