Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has warned that illegal hawkers occupying roads and footpaths outside designated areas will face eviction, seizure of goods and legal action.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Thursday (October 1) after inspecting cleanliness activities, removal of illegal roadside occupations and public suffering in Dhaka’s Dhalpur area.

The DSCC administrator said the city corporation had designated specific footpaths and locations for hawkers.

“Outside these designated areas, hawkers will not be allowed to operate illegally on any footpath, including the main road from Zero Point to Sadarghat,” he said.

He said all hawkers in the city would have to operate under a regulatory system and be registered with the city corporation.

“No hawker will be allowed to operate anywhere in Dhaka without registration,” he said.

Regarding repeated occupation of footpaths after eviction, Abdus Salam said the authorities would now seize goods and file cases immediately along with eviction drives.

On notices and rehabilitation of hawkers, he said the government had taken decisions after holding several meetings with hawker leaders, so there was no need to issue new notices.

Regarding rehabilitation, he urged journalists to consider whether Dhaka residents who pay taxes to the city corporation want footpaths and roads to remain occupied by hawkers.

During the inspection, the DSCC administrator also expressed dissatisfaction over public suffering caused by prolonged Dhaka WASA work at the entrance to DSCC Regional Office-5.

He said thousands of people visiting the office every day were facing severe difficulties because of the ongoing WASA work.

He said WASA and other utility agencies had been instructed to complete road excavation and related work within stipulated deadlines through better coordination.

Abdus Salam said regular meetings were being held every 15 days under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to improve coordination among public service agencies.

He said the city corporation was working jointly with WASA, T&T, the power sector and other relevant agencies to resolve longstanding problems through coordinated action.
