A Chuadanga court has sentenced a 51-year-old man to life imprisonment for possessing and storing drugs illegally.

Judge Shimul Kumar Biswas of the Chuadanga Special Sessions Court handed down the verdict in the presence of convict Jalal Malitha on Saturday afternoon. The court also fined him Tk5,000, with an additional one month in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

Jalal, son of late Altaf Hossain Malitha of Kanapukur Para in Chuadanga municipality, was arrested on March 28, 2021, after the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) recovered 899 ampoules of buprenorphine from a bus at Academy Mor in Chuadanga.

Acting on a tip-off, a DNC team conducted an anti-drug operation and arrested Jalal from the bus.

DNC Inspector Abdullah Al Mamun later filed a case with Chuadanga Sadar Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act, accusing Jalal of illegally possessing and storing the drugs for sale.

Following an investigation, DNC Sub-Inspector Sahara Yasmin submitted a charge sheet to the court.

After examining the statements of four witnesses and other evidence, the court found Jalal guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
