A court in Faridpur on Monday sentenced two young men to life imprisonment for abducting and repeatedly raping a 15-year-old madrasa student inside a moving microbus in Bhanga in 2020.
Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Shamima Parvin, also a district and sessions judge, delivered the verdict around 1:30pm.
The convicts are Mohon Biswas, 26, and Tayeb Matubbar, 27, residents of Hoglakandi in Bhanga municipality. They were absent from the court during the verdict, and the court subsequently issued arrest warrants against them.
The court sentenced each of them to life imprisonment with hard labour and fined Tk2 lakh for rape. In default of payment, they will serve an additional three years in prison.
They were also sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour and fined Tk20,000 each for abduction. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year in jail.
Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan said the court ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.
According to the case statement, the 15-year-old girl was forcibly taken into a dark-glass microbus near her home in a village in Bhanga around 4pm on August 8, 2020. The accused allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth before abducting her.
They then drove through Bhanga Golchattar and along the highway near Munsurabad, where Mohon and Tayeb allegedly raped her one after another inside the moving vehicle.
They reportedly dropped her off near her home in the evening. The girl later told her family about the incident.
Her father filed a case against the two men with Bhanga Police Station on August 9 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Inspector (Investigation) Bikash Mondal of Bhanga Police Station investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet against the two accused on January 3, 2021.
