A disabled young man died after allegedly being tied up and beaten with sticks during a purported healing ritual in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram.

The deceased was identified as 18-year-old Saeed Mohammad Abdullah, son of Nur Mohammad Choukidar of Dangarchar area under Juldha Union.

The incident took place at around 5pm on Tuesday in the Dhangarchar Ebaduallah’s ancestral home area in Ward No. 1 of Juldha Union.

According to locals, Abdullah had been disabled and his family had sought advice from several doctors in an attempt to improve his condition. When his condition did not improve, the family reportedly followed the advice of a traditional healer, or kabiraj.

On Tuesday afternoon, Abdullah was allegedly tied by his hands and feet inside the house and beaten with sticks as part of a ritual intended to cure him. He sustained serious injuries and died from excessive blood loss, according to police.

Karnaphuli Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nur Ahmed said the young man was being beaten with sticks while a healing ritual was being carried out on the advice of the kabiraj.

Police arrested Abdullah’s father, Nur Mohammad, and the traditional healer, Abdur Nur, on Tuesday night in connection with the incident.

The body was sent to the Chattogram Medical College morgue for an autopsy, the OC said.
