Police have arrested a man in a case filed over the alleged forced resignation of Rajshahi Medical University (RAMEBI) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Jawadul Haque.
The arrested man was identified as Abdus Salam, 56. Although he was not named in the case statement, police said his involvement was found during the investigation.
Salam was arrested during a raid in the Paramedical area of Rajshahi city late Tuesday night. He is a resident of the area.
Rajpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the arrest on Wednesday noon.
According to the case details, a group of people entered the RAMEBI VC’s office in a procession at around 11am on Tuesday. They allegedly accused the VC of being an “ally” of the Awami League and accused him of awarding various university contracts to Dhaka-based contractors.
The group allegedly misbehaved with and physically assaulted the VC before forcing him to sign a resignation letter that had reportedly been prepared in advance.
After leaving the office, the group allegedly locked the university’s main gate. They were also accused of removing the CPU of a computer and CCTV equipment from the VC’s office and disconnecting electricity and internet services across the campus.
Nazmul Hossain, the VC’s personal secretary, later filed a case with Rajpara Police Station against unidentified individuals.
Police said Salam was arrested as an accused identified during the investigation.
OC Abul Kalam Azad said Salam would be produced before a court on Wednesday. Police are also working to arrest the other people involved in the incident, he added.
