The 153rd death anniversary of eminent Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt was observed in Jashore on Monday with tributes, discussions, poetry recitations and cultural performances celebrating his enduring literary legacy.
The programmes were held at Sagardari, the poet’s ancestral home in Keshabpur upazila, where admirers, academics, cultural activists and local residents gathered to pay homage to one of the pioneers of modern Bengali literature.
The day’s observance began with the Keshabpur Upazila administration, Madhusudan Academy and various social and cultural organisations placing wreaths at the poet’s bust.
A discussion on the life and works of Michael Madhusudan Dutt was later held at the Madhusudan Academy.
Head of the Bangla Department at Khulna University Dr Md Dulal Hossain attended the programme as the chief guest and highlighted the poet’s remarkable contributions to Bengali literature, including his introduction of blank verse and his role in modernising Bengali poetry.
The discussion was chaired by Madhusudan Academy Chairman Asaduzzaman Selim.
Among others, Madhusudan Academy Director Khasru Parvez, Assistant Professor Kanaila Bhattacharya of Abu Sharaf Sadeq Commerce and Technical College, Deputy Director of the academy poet Makbul Mahfuz, Publicity and Publication Secretary Taheruzzaman and Keshabpur Press Club President Ashrafuzzaman Khan spoke on the occasion.
The speakers recalled Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s lasting influence on Bengali language and literature, describing him as one of the greatest literary figures of the Bengal Renaissance whose works continue to inspire generations of readers and writers.
The commemorative programme concluded with recitations of the poet’s works and a cultural performance featuring songs and literary presentations in his honour.
