President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on public and private universities to place greater emphasis on developing skilled human resources in line with the country’s growing needs.
He made the call on Thursday afternoon when a delegation led by Daffodil International University (DIU) Board of Trustees Chairman Dr Md Sabur Khan paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
The president said one of the key responsibilities of universities is to produce skilled professionals capable of contributing to different sectors of the country.
“Alongside higher education, universities must focus on job-oriented education and research to develop a workforce suited to the country’s needs,” he said.
He questioned why Bangladesh still needs to hire foreign professionals to operate strategic installations, ports, specialised institutions and private companies despite producing a large number of graduates more than five decades after independence.
During the meeting, Dr Sabur Khan briefed the president on DIU’s academic programmes, research activities and initiatives focused on employment-oriented education.
He said the university offers education and research opportunities in areas including information and communication technology, food and nutrition, fisheries and multimedia. It also has a dedicated patent development division to support students and researchers in securing patent rights for innovations and facilitating their commercialisation.
The president expressed satisfaction with the university’s activities and stressed the importance of maintaining the quality of higher education.
Dr Sabur Khan also invited the president to attend DIU’s upcoming convocation, which he accepted.
The president’s Military Secretary, Secretary and Press Secretary, along with DIU’s vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor, members of the Board of Trustees, deans and registrar, were present at the meeting.
