5 Bangladeshi universities make THE global top 1,000 bracket

Five Bangladeshi universities have been placed in the 801–1000 bracket in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.

The universities are American International University-Bangladesh, Daffodil International University (DIU), Jahangirnagar University, North South University and Bangladesh Agricultural University.

The University of Dhaka, which was ranked in the 801–1000 bracket last year, slipped to the 1001–1200 bracket in the latest edition.

The UK-based THE published the rankings in collaboration with Elsevier, evaluating universities across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry impact and international outlook.

A total of 2,297 institutions from 118 countries and territories featured in this year’s rankings. Bangladesh had 35 institutions on the list, including 25 with direct rankings and 10 listed as “reporters”.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was placed in the 1001–1200 bracket but led the country in two indicators: research volume, income and reputation, and industry impact.

Bangladesh Medical University, ranked in the 1201–1400 bracket, scored highest nationally for the quality of its learning environment. DIU led the country in research quality and international outlook.

Globally, the University of Oxford retained the top position for the 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked second, followed by Princeton University, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge.

China’s Tsinghua University rose to 11th place, overtaking Switzerland’s ETH Zurich, while the National University of Singapore entered the top 15. For the first time, three Asian universities featured in the top 15, and Asia moved ahead of continental Europe in the rankings.
