Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman Dr Shafiqur Rahman arrived in Chattogram on Friday to assess the flood situation and express solidarity with affected communities.
He landed at Shah Amanat International Airport at 7:50am and spoke to journalists at around 8:30am.
The leader of the opposition in parliament said the flood situation in Chattogram was discussed in the house on Thursday, with both the opposition and the government making statements on the issue.
He said his visit aims to assess the condition of flood victims firsthand, stand beside them, and press for necessary government action.
Expressing condolences to those killed in recent floods, landslides and other disasters, he prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased.
The opposition leader also voiced concern over Chattogram’s chronic waterlogging, saying even moderate rainfall causes severe flooding, overflowing drains, widespread suffering and, at times, loss of life.
He said it is the government’s responsibility to implement a permanent solution.
According to his itinerary, Dr Rahman will first visit Banshkhali, followed by inspections of flood-hit areas in Lohagara and Satkania, before touring affected neighbourhoods in Chattogram city.
He said his party would support flood victims within its limited capacity and had instructed its affiliated organisations to assist bereaved families and carry out relief operations in the affected areas.
Referring to the nationwide flood situation, Dr Rahman said Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions have been the worst affected.
He also stressed the need for the swift implementation of the Teesta Mega Project, saying people now expect the government to fulfil its commitments.
