Automated process control systems (APCS) have been installed at both units of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, while an Operator Information Support System (OISS) is being implemented for the first time at a Rosatom project outside Russia.
The systems, supplied by the Automated Control Systems Division (RASU) of Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom, comprise around 20,000 pieces of equipment across 43 systems. They will monitor more than 7,000 process parameters, including reactor stability, helping ensure the plant’s safe and efficient operation.
Rosatom announced the development in a press release on Tuesday, October 13.
Another key component is the OISS, developed by RASU using digital twin technology for the power units. The system has already been integrated into Unit 1 and is participating in startup operations. A similar system will be installed at Unit 2.
The system analyses data from 360 process systems, identifies potential deviations and provides operators with recommendations based on more than 80 guidelines, including instructions for responding to emergencies.
By presenting complex operational information in an accessible format, the system is designed to support informed decision-making and help control-room personnel respond more effectively to changing conditions.
Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev said the Rooppur plant was not only the largest project of cooperation between Russia and Bangladesh but also a pioneering initiative in the application of modern automation and control technologies.
He said the OISS was being implemented for the first time at a nuclear power plant built by Rosatom outside Russia.
According to Likhachev, the system would help reduce response times and operating costs while serving as a reliable support tool for control-room personnel.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being built by Rosatom’s engineering division, Atomstroyexport. The project features two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors.
