The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has directed all airlines operating flights to Saudi Arabia or using its airports for transit from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to take urgent measures to assist passengers amid severe flight disruptions caused by the current security situation in the kingdom.
In a letter signed by Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the airlines were instructed to immediately inform affected passengers of flight delays, cancellations and schedule changes through SMS, telephone calls, email, websites and social media.
Passengers should also be advised not to travel to the airport without confirmation of their flights, the letter said.
The airlines have been asked to coordinate with the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka and relevant authorities if passengers require visa extensions or other immigration assistance.
They have also been instructed to ensure seating arrangements, drinking water, food and other necessary assistance for affected passengers who arrive at the airport without receiving prior notice or being aware of the disruptions.
Special attention must be given to elderly passengers, children and people with disabilities, according to the directive.
To manage the situation, each airline has been asked to urgently appoint a focal-point officer and assign the necessary staff, informing the airport’s flight management authorities of the arrangements.
CAAB urged all airlines to treat the matter with the utmost importance and ensure passenger safety, welfare and effective communication amid the disruptions.
