Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has taken an initiative to modernise traffic management using artificial intelligence (AI) to ease congestion and detect criminal activities in the city.

The decision was made at the 14th meeting of the KCC Management Committee, held at the Shaheed Altaf Auditorium of the city corporation’s Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday, October 13.

The meeting was chaired by KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju.

Under the initiative, AI-powered traffic management will be introduced through a public-private partnership (PPP), alongside measures to improve road discipline and strengthen crime detection.

The committee also approved several measures to improve urban services, including the installation of solar panels on KCC-owned buildings, the repair of roads excavated by Khulna WASA for sewerage lines, and the removal of illegal encroachments from roads and footpaths.

To address the dengue situation, the committee decided to procure mosquito-control chemicals from Narayanganj Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd, operated by the Bangladesh Navy, under the direct procurement method (DPM).

Public awareness campaigns against dengue and chikungunya will also be conducted at key locations across the city through billboards, unipoles, banners and festoons, in line with the prime minister’s directives.

The corporation decided to organise cleaning operations in two shifts, with sanitation workers working four hours daily. It also plans to register van operators associated with NGOs, community-based organisations and private entrepreneurs involved in door-to-door waste collection to bring greater discipline to waste disposal.

Aprons will be provided to sanitation workers under KCC’s conservancy department.

The committee decided to name the science building of Khulna Collegiate Girls’ School and KCC Women’s College after Professor Mujibar Rahman.

It also agreed to write to the Khulna Development Authority (KDA), proposing that the Malopota intersection area and KDA Avenue be renamed ‘Bidrohi Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani’.

The meeting approved recommendations from the shop-allocation committee formed under Section 3 of the Khulna City Corporation Market By-laws, 2014.

It also decided to collect a daily toll of Tk 10 from easy-bikes used to transport goods to and from the KCC wholesale kitchen market at Sonadanga Truck Terminal.

Separate committees will be formed to coordinate rental rates for newly purchased equipment, including a small plate compactor, a reversible plate compactor and a prime mover with a low-bed trailer, with rates charged by other government agencies. Another three-member committee will determine fees for changes to holding ownership records.

The meeting was conducted by KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed.

Among those attending were Additional Police Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police Muhammad Shahnewaz Khaled, Khulna WASA Deputy Managing Director Md Akhtar Hossain, KDA Member for Administration and Finance M M Mahmudur Rahman, Mongla Port Authority Deputy Manager (Administration) S M Maidul Islam, Khulna district administration Assistant Commissioner Md Zakaria, BTCL Deputy General Manager S M Sadman Rahman, and a sub-divisional engineer of the Housing and Building Research-related authority, along with KCC officials and departmental heads.
