The government has initiated steps to introduce a ration facility for public servants in grades 12 to 20, with the proposal receiving preliminary approval from the Finance Division and the Cabinet Division, officials said.
The Cabinet Division last month sent a letter to the Finance Secretary directing the ministry to take necessary steps to implement the proposal and report progress regularly.
According to officials, the Finance Division has been asked to submit monthly progress reports to the Cabinet Division by the 10th of every month and present updates at a review meeting with secretaries of the Cabinet Division and implementing ministries every three months.
The proposal was first raised by the Deputy Commissioner of Pirojpur during the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference held on May 3, citing rising inflation and the increasing cost of living.
The proposal said employees in grades 12 to 20 are facing mounting financial pressure due to higher living expenses, forcing many to rely on loans and borrowings, which in turn affects their mental well-being and job performance.
It argued that introducing a ration system would help ease their financial burden, improve their standard of living and enable them to perform their duties more effectively.
Following the conference, the Cabinet Division formally requested the Finance Division to examine the proposal and take appropriate action.
Officials said the process to introduce ration benefits has now begun, although no decision has yet been made on whether the scheme will be implemented in the short, medium or long term.
Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet Division’s Field Administration Wing, Md. Mamun, said all ministries have been instructed on their respective responsibilities regarding the implementation of proposals discussed at the DC Conference.
He added that ministries have been directed to submit implementation progress reports to the Cabinet Division by the 10th of each month, while a compilation of the conference decisions is being prepared for publication by the Government Printing Press (BG Press).
