A large tree toppled onto a Jagannath University (JnU) bus amid continuous rainfall on Sunday morning, causing extensive damage to the vehicle but leaving all students, the driver and staff unharmed.
The incident occurred at the university’s Shanta Chattar on the campus.
Witnesses said the tree suddenly uprooted during the downpour and crashed onto a university bus parked in the transport area, triggering panic among students nearby.
The massive trunk pierced the roof of the bus, causing severe damage. University officials later visited the scene and began removing the tree while assessing the extent of the damage.
Professor Md Tariq Bin Atik, Transport Administrator of the university, said, “A large tree fell onto one of the university buses this morning.
Fortunately, no students or anyone else were injured. However, the bus sustained extensive damage. Preliminary estimates put the loss at around Tk 300,000 to Tk 400,000.”
Expressing concern over other hazardous trees on the campus, he said several trees pose safety risks and should be identified and dealt with promptly.
“Today the tree fell on a bus, but had it fallen on students, it could have caused a major tragedy. The issue must be addressed with urgency,” he added.
