Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will make his first official visit to Barishal on Monday (July 13), generating excitement and raising expectations across the country’s southern region.
Besides political engagements, people are hoping for major announcements on long-awaited infrastructure projects, including the Dhaka–Barishal six-lane highway, the establishment of an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Barishal, the Bhola–Barishal bridge, and a gas pipeline to the region.
According to the itinerary, the prime minister will inaugurate a tree plantation programme at Batajor in Gournadi Upazila in the morning before attending another plantation event near Bell’s Park in Barishal city.
Later, he is scheduled to join an organisational meeting with leaders of the BNP and its associate bodies at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy.
He is also expected to meet prominent Islamic scholars to discuss the country’s overall situation and religious issues, according to sources.
Local residents say the proposed infrastructure projects would boost industrialisation, investment, employment and connectivity, helping reduce the region’s long-standing development gap.
Administrative and political preparations for the visit have already been completed, with security, traffic management and public arrangements finalised at a coordination meeting attended by senior government officials, lawmakers and BNP leaders.
