SATKHIRA: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian citizen with two packets of gold paste weighing 813.50 grammes and valued at around Tk1.55 crore while he was attempting to cross into India through the Bhomra border.

The detainee was identified as Jahir Shah Golam Hossain, 43, son of Golam Hossain Sher Khan of Chitak Camp area in Mumbai, India. His passport number is Z-6487458.

Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Ashikur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB-33 Battalion in Satkhira, disclosed the information in a press release issued on Monday night.

According to BGB, acting on a tip-off that an Indian passport holder would attempt to smuggle a large consignment of gold from Bangladesh to India without paying customs duties and taxes through the Bhomra Immigration Checkpost, a special operational team of Bhomra Border Outpost (BOP) launched an operation.

The team detained Jahir Shah on suspicion near the BGB checkpoint adjacent to the immigration area at around 9:00am on Monday.

During preliminary interrogation, he denied involvement in gold smuggling. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for a physical examination.

Following the examination, doctors recovered two packets of gold paste concealed inside his rectum. The seized gold paste weighed 813.50 grammes and had an estimated market value of Tk1.55 crore, BGB said.

Lieutenant Colonel Kazi Ashikur Rahman confirmed the incident to BSS, saying the detainee had been handed over to Satkhira Sadar Police Station after the necessary legal procedures.
