The Malaysian Immigration Department has detained 503 foreign nationals, including 290 Bangladeshis, for violating immigration laws. The arrests were made during simultaneous raids across 18 different locations, targeting businesses illegally employing foreign workers or operated by foreigners.
Immigration Department Director-General Zakaria Shaaban stated that 876 officers from the Immigration Department, National Registration Department, Police, and local government participated in the joint operation. Authorities checked the documents of 2,260 employers and foreign nationals, ultimately arresting 503 individuals.
While the majority of those detained are Bangladeshi, the group also includes, Myanmar 101, Indonesia 66, Nepal 38, India: 36, Other countries 10
The detainees are aged between 21 and 52, and include 95 women. All have been sent to various immigration depots for further investigation and legal processing. Additionally, 120 individuals were served special notices (Borang 29) to assist as witnesses.
The immigration department noted that the primary allegations against the detainees include lacking valid documents, overstaying expired visas, and violating visa conditions. For instance, several individuals holding construction sector visas were found working in clothing stores. A few UNHCR cardholders were also detained to verify the authenticity of their cards.
The Director-General added that over 200 “hotspots” have been identified across Malaysia, with half of them located in the Klang Valley area.
