Barishal: The divisional rally of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance began in Barishal on Saturday. The event was inaugurated at around 12:15 p.m. with an opening speech by Syed Ahmed, president of the district unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, at the Hemayet Uddin Central Eidgah Ground on Band Road. The main session was scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
Despite intermittent rain and unfavorable weather throughout the morning, groups of supporters from different parts of the city marched to the rally venue.
According to Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal, Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the rally was organized to press for the implementation of the people’s referendum mandate, relief from public hardship, control of rising commodity prices, improvements to the transportation system, and the overall development of the country’s neglected southern region.
Organizers said they expected several hundred thousand participants from the six districts of the Barishal Division. Similar divisional rallies have already been held in five other divisions.
Among those expected to address the gathering were Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman; Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Col. Oli Ahmad (Bir Bikram); National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, MP; Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish Ameer Mamunul Haque; AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju; and other central leaders of the 11-party alliance.
