Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has said that many aspirations of the 1971 Liberation War and the July movement remain unfulfilled, though efforts are underway to rebuild the state and implement the “July Charter.”
Speaking at a discussion organized by the National Editors Council in Dhaka on Sunday, Fakhrul noted that years of struggle to restore democracy—including student movement and sacrifices—had sparked renewed hope among the people.
He said those expectations have not been entirely lost, but emphasized the need to seize the current opportunity to reconstruct state institutions and strengthen democratic governance.
Fakhrul also criticized political opponents for selectively interpreting the July Charter, urging them to join the constitutional reform committee instead of presenting issues out of context.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue, he added that national challenges should be resolved through discussion and consensus rather than division.
