The government is developing a Tree Monitoring App to modernise afforestation efforts by ensuring greater transparency, accountability and continuous monitoring of saplings planted under nationwide tree plantation programmes.
The digital platform is being introduced as a key component of the government’s flagship “One Child, One Tree” initiative and other afforestation projects under the National Green Mission, according to the National Budget Speech for Fiscal Year 2026-27 (FY27) and the Bangladesh Climate Budget Report 2026-27.
The app is designed to monitor the survival, growth and maintenance of saplings after plantation, addressing one of the biggest challenges in large-scale afforestation programmes—ensuring proper care of trees, particularly those planted at the household level.
Under the “One Child, One Tree” programme, students of government primary schools will plant one crore (10 million) saplings at their homes and homesteads, promoting environmental awareness and responsibility among children while expanding the country’s green cover.
To improve monitoring accuracy, the Tree Monitoring App will be integrated with GPS and GIS-based data collection systems, enabling digital mapping and real-time record-keeping of afforested areas managed by the Forest Department. The system will help authorities track plantation sites, monitor sapling growth and identify areas requiring maintenance, particularly in remote rural and urban locations where manual supervision is difficult.
The app is expected to play a central role in improving sapling survival rates and strengthening accountability in the implementation of government-funded plantation programmes.
The National Green Mission aims to plant 25 crore (250 million) trees over the next five years to restore degraded forests, maintain ecological balance and increase carbon sequestration as part of Bangladesh’s climate resilience strategy.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the programme is also expected to generate around 350,000 direct and indirect green jobs, contributing to sustainable economic development.
According to the budget documents, the government also plans to bring 50 percent of coastal mangrove forests under carbon trading mechanisms, creating new revenue opportunities while supporting conservation efforts.
The broader afforestation strategy prioritises mangrove plantations in coastal char areas, restoration of Sal forests in hilly and central regions, and conservation of endangered forest species to protect biodiversity.
It also includes context-specific plantation initiatives along roads, highways, embankments, riverbanks and canal banks, as well as expanded urban forestry and agroforestry programmes.
In addition, the FY27 budget proposes a 15 percent VAT on the import of trees and aromatic tree extracts as part of broader environmental and resource management measures.
With its integration of digital technologies, the Tree Monitoring App is expected to become a cornerstone of the National Green Mission, enhancing transparency, improving plantation success rates and supporting Bangladesh’s long-term goal of building a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable future.
