The government has constituted a 26-member Executive Committee of the National Environment and Climate Change Committee to strengthen policy coordination, monitoring and implementation of environment and climate-related initiatives.
The Cabinet Division has issued a notification in this regard, according to an official handout released on Thursday.
Under the new structure, the Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will serve as the chairperson of the executive committee.
The committee comprises representatives from key ministries, government agencies, research institutions and the private sector. Its members include the advisers responsible for agriculture, water resources, disaster management and relief, and shipping; the state minister for environment, forest and climate change; the executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA); and senior secretaries and secretaries of relevant ministries and divisions.
Other members include the member of the General Economics Division of the Bangladesh Planning Commission, the Director General of the Department of Environment, the Chief Conservator of Forests, the Managing Director of the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust, the Executive Director of the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), the President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), and two civil society experts on environment and climate change nominated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The Additional Secretary (Environment) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will serve as the Member Secretary of the committee.
According to the notification, the executive committee will play a key role in reviewing and monitoring the implementation of the National Environment Policy across various ministries, divisions and government agencies.
Its responsibilities will include assessing the implementation progress of the National Environment Policy and recommending necessary revisions in response to changing environmental and climate realities; initiating measures to address inter-ministerial issues related to environment and climate change; referring unresolved matters to the National Environment and Climate Change Committee when necessary; and monitoring the implementation of decisions taken by the apex committee.
The executive body will also consider and provide recommendations on other important issues related to environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable development in Bangladesh.
