Authorities seized 160 gold bars weighing a total of 18.720 kilograms from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka today in a major anti-smuggling operation.

The gold bars were recovered from Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-148 following intelligence provided by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) regarding an alleged attempt to smuggle gold through the aircraft’s cargo compartment, according to a press release issued by the airport authorities.

Acting on the intelligence tip-off, a joint team comprising officials from the DGFI, Aviation Security (AVSEC), Customs authorities and the security division of Biman Bangladesh Airlines conducted a coordinated operation at the airport.

During the operation, the team recovered 160 gold bars with a combined weight of 18.720 kilograms, marking one of the significant gold seizures at the country’s main international gateway in recent times.

The recovered gold has been handed over to the Customs authorities for further investigation and legal action, the release said.

A case has been filed with Bimanbandar Police Station in connection with the incident, while authorities are continuing their investigation to identify those involved in the alleged smuggling attempt.
