`Govt has no information on Hasina-Shahabuddin phone call’

The government has no information about the reported phone call between outgoing President Mohammad Shahabuddin and deposed Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina.

Clarifying the notion on Sunday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government has no information to support media reports alleging that recently departed President Mohammad Shahabuddin held a phone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following her ouster during the July mass uprising.

Responding to a question about whether intelligence agencies had verified the alleged conversation, Ahmed said:

“We saw it in the newspapers. A newspaper published such a report, but what evidence does it have? That is a question for the newspaper. We have no such information.”

He also dismissed speculation that Shahabuddin would have needed to travel to London to communicate with Hasina.

“Does someone have to go to London to have a conversation? In today’s internet era, there’s no need to travel to London to speak with someone. To me, that sounds implausible. If someone wanted to talk, they could do so from here as well,” he said.
