DHAKA- Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit has submitted a memorandum to the university administration demanding a reduction in convocation fees, better-quality gowns and gift items, and a permanent policy to ensure regular convocation ceremonies.

A delegation led by Dhaka University Chhatra Shibir Organising Secretary Sazzad Hossain Khan met Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Abdus Salam at noon on Wednesday and presented the memorandum in the absence of the vice-chancellor, who was represented by the pro-vice-chancellor in charge.

The memorandum outlined three demands.

First, the university should revise convocation fees for students at all levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil and PhD programmes, to make them affordable for students from ordinary financial backgrounds.

Second, the quality of gowns, caps, bags and other items provided at convocation ceremonies should be improved. The organisation also called for transparent procurement, proper quality checks and accountability for expenditure.

Third, the university should formulate and implement a permanent policy to hold convocation ceremonies at a fixed time every year, avoiding prolonged delays.

During the meeting, Professor Abdus Salam listened to the students’ demands and assured the delegation that he would present them at the main meeting on the upcoming convocation.

Dhaka University Chhatra Shibir expressed hope that the administration would take prompt and effective measures, taking into account students’ financial capacity, their entitlements and longstanding problems related to convocation ceremonies.
