A deep depression over the northwestern Bay of Bengal crossed the West Bengal-Odisha coast early Tuesday and is expected to weaken gradually as it moves further inland, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said.
In a special weather bulletin issued on Tuesday, Assistant Meteorologist Afroza Sultana said the system crossed the coast around 6:00 am and is now located over northern Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal.
The BMD said the depression is likely to continue moving in a west-northwesterly direction while gradually losing strength. However, its influence is still creating significant pressure differences over the northern Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh’s coastal areas, which could trigger squally or gusty winds.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to continue displaying Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.
The weather office also instructed all fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal to remain close to the coast and navigate with caution until further notice.
Meanwhile, the inland river port forecast valid until 6:00 pm Tuesday warned of temporary rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally winds blowing at speeds of 45 to 60 km/h from the south or southeast over Rajshahi, Pabna, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet.
The BMD has advised river ports in these areas to hoist Warning Signal No. 1.
