Dhaka: Water levels in the country’s major rivers continue to recede, while the overall flood situation is gradually improving as heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas and within the country decreases.
According to information from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board and relevant weather bulletins on Wednesday (August 26), water levels in rivers across the northeastern, eastern and southeastern regions have started to decline.
Water levels in the Manu, Khowai and Dhalai rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts are currently below the danger level. The decline in water levels in eastern rivers is also contributing to a steady improvement in the existing flood situation in low-lying areas.
Weather and hydrological analyses indicate that there is no strong possibility of heavy rainfall in the northeastern region and adjoining upstream areas over the next two days. Water levels in the Gomti River in the Cumilla region and low-lying areas of Feni district are stable and showing signs of improvement.
Meanwhile, water levels in the Sangu, Matamuhuri and Karnaphuli rivers in the southeastern districts of Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar are fluctuating from time to time, but the overall situation remains under control.
Engineers of the Water Development Board said water levels in the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are falling, while the Ganges-Padma river system remains at normal levels. They also said the flow of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region is completely normal and is expected to remain so in the coming days.
According to data from 100 water-level monitoring stations, river water is flowing below the danger level at most locations. Local monitoring teams and engineers of the Water Development Board are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance to respond to any emergency.
As water levels recede, necessary measures are being taken at vulnerable points to prevent riverbank erosion. The bulletin said that as floodwaters gradually drain from affected areas, normal life is slowly returning to communities.
