A proposal to appoint a consortium of consultancy firms at a cost of Tk 57.90 crore has been recommended for final approval to support a project aimed at developing climate-resilient livelihoods and improving water-resource management in the three hill districts of the Chattogram Hill Tracts.
The recommendation was made at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
According to sources at the meeting, the project titled “Climate-Resilient Livelihood Development and Watershed Management in the Chattogram Hill Tracts” is being implemented jointly by the Bangladesh government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The project covers Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban districts and is being implemented on the ground jointly by the Chattogram Hill Tracts Regional Council and the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
The international procurement proposal was placed before the committee for appointing a project implementation support consultancy firm under a specific package of the project.
Under the proposal, Nepal-based Environmental and Natural Resource Management Consultancy ERMC Private Limited has been recommended as the lead consulting firm. It will provide consultancy services in partnership with Bangladesh-based Dev Consultants Limited, Aranyak Foundation and Anusandhani Creeds Limited.
The consultancy consortium will provide technical support in developing alternative livelihood opportunities for people living in climate-vulnerable and remote areas of the hill districts.
It will also assist in the scientific management of local water resources, promote the sustainable use of natural resources and support environmentally friendly infrastructure development.
The consultants will be responsible for providing technical assistance, preparing appropriate plans, conducting regular supervision and supporting overall project management and implementation.
The project is expected to contribute to improving the resilience of communities in the Chattogram Hill Tracts while promoting sustainable management of the region’s natural resources.
