Heavy overnight rainfall disrupted normal life across Chuadanga, leaving roads waterlogged, damaging infrastructure and hampering transportation.
According to the Chuadanga First-Class Weather Observatory, 167 mm of rainfall was recorded between 3:40 am and 9:00 am on Friday, said acting observatory officer Jaminur Rahman.
All four upazila towns and municipal areas in the district were inundated as rainwater mixed with overflowing drains, creating widespread waterlogging and making many roads impassable.
Residents alleged that no visible emergency measures were taken by the upazila administration or municipal authorities to ease the waterlogging. Water also accumulated along both sides of roads, disrupting vehicle movement.
In Damurhuda upazila, a section of the Damurhuda–Karpasdanga road near Chitla-Gobindahuda village was damaged after heavy rain eroded the roadside embankment. Locals blamed illegal sand extraction from nearby farmland for weakening the soil, warning that further erosion could cut off the road used by thousands of commuters.
Another road linking Joyrampur Kathaltala Bazar and Kumaridah also partially collapsed near a mosque, according to local residents.
Damurhuda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Lovely Yasmin said she had inspected the damaged sites along with officials from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). She said efforts were underway to prevent further erosion and restore the road for safe traffic.
The persistent rain also submerged croplands across the district, while many daily wage earners were unable to leave their homes. Public transport, including rickshaws, battery-powered three-wheelers and other passenger vehicles, remained sparse as the downpour continued.
