Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) on Monday observed its ‘Tree Plantation Programme 2026’ and announced a year-round tree plantation campaign as part of the government’s initiative to plant 250 million trees over five years to combat climate change and protect the environment.
The programme, organised by the university’s Environment Development and Conservation Committee, began with a colourful procession from the administrative building and concluded in front of the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building.
Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Yarul Kabir said tree plantation was essential for maintaining ecological balance and urged everyone to plant at least 100 trees during their lifetime.
“An average person consumes as much oxygen in a lifetime as about 70 trees produce. Planting more trees is one way of repaying our debt to nature,” he said.
The vice-chancellor said the university was not only planting saplings but also ensuring their proper care to transform the campus into an ideal green campus. He added that extensive afforestation programmes would also be undertaken at the university’s Jhenaidah campus. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said tree plantation should not be confined to a single day but continued throughout the year.
“We are launching a year-round plantation programme. If we continue this effort in a planned manner, we will be able to contribute significantly to achieving the prime minister’s target of planting 250 million trees over the next five years,” he said.
Following the discussion, the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor inaugurated the plantation programme by planting a neem sapling beside the university’s foundation stone, named after former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, as part of the “Zia Tree” initiative honouring former President Shaheed Ziaur Rahman.
Guests and members of the Environment Development and Conservation Committee later planted fruit, medicinal and ornamental tree saplings at different locations across the campus.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Mariam Jamila, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Prof Dr Md Ziaul Amin, Chairman of the Fisheries and Marine Bioscience Department Prof Dr Md Aminur Rahman, Chairman of the English Department Dr Farzana Nasrin, Proctor Dr Md Hamidur Rahman, Provost Dr Farhana Yasmin, Convener of the Environment Development and Conservation Committee Prof Dr Md Manjurul Haque, Prof Dr Md Sirajul Islam, Prof Dr Md Mir Mosharraf Hossain, committee member Dr Mohammad Naoshin Amin Sheikh, Member-Secretary and Assistant Registrar Mohammad Riazul Haque, among those present were present at the function.
The programme was moderated by Dr Md Sabbir Hossain, a member of the Environment Development and Conservation Committee.
